アル・グリーンの代表作といえば「Let's Stay Together」が筆頭に挙げる人が多いでしょうが、ソウル・ファンなら間違いなく74年のこちらを推すはず。全曲アルが曲作りに参加し、シンガーとしてだけでなくソングライターとしても最も脂の乗っていた時期のアルバムであり、あの超クラシック"God Bressed Our Love"を収録しているのだから。バックのハイ・リズムは前作以上にタイトになり、アル自身もファルセットは多用せずに、逆に優しさや雄々しさ、甘さや切なさといった感情を見事にヴォーカル･コントロールしている。喜びに満ちたポップ・チューン"Sha-La-La"、シル･ジョンソンやトーキング･ヘッズもカヴァーした"Take Me To The River"のシャウト、ソリッドな"The City"等"God Bressed〜"も含め、前半部分が特に素晴らしい。こういう作品を聴いていると時が経つのを本当に忘れてしまう。
